Additional support for Nepal's earthquake recovery

The Australian Government has pledged further support for Nepal’s long term recovery following two devastating earthquakes earlier this year.

As the monsoon season approaches many people remain vulnerable and in need of ongoing support as they work to reconstruct their communities.

Today Australia has pledged an additional $6 million at the International Conference on Nepal's Reconstruction in Kathmandu. This contribution adds to Australia’s initial recovery package, which complements Australia’s significant aid program in Nepal.

Australia’s total recovery package will:

  • provide more than 17,000 children with access to education and counselling in safe temporary learning spaces;

  • rebuild twelve schools in five districts using earthquake resistant technology;

  • revive more than 13,000 businesses to stimulate local economic recovery;

  • support affected communities to resolve social conflicts caused by the earthquakes and reduce vulnerabilities such as gender based violence; and

  • assist the Nepalese Department of Education with nation-wide damage assessments and reconstruction planning through the deployment of Australian infrastructure specialists.

This latest support brings Australia’s total contribution to the relief and recovery effort to more than $28 million. Two ADF C-17 aircraft also delivered 15 tonnes of humanitarian relief and 31 Australian Government officials travelled to Nepal and Bangkok to assist in Australia’s humanitarian and consular response.
