Finland to accelerate Myanmar’s peace process
Kimmo Kiljunen, the Foreign Minister’s Special Representative to regional peace-mediation tasks, visited Myanmar and Thailand just before Easter. The purpose of the visit was to prepare an international coordination meeting on peace mediation that would support the peace negotiations between the Government of Myanmar and ethnic groups.
As a result of the trip, it was agreed that efforts would be made to hold a seminar in Yangon in the beginning of June, to be attended by international and national organisations and researchers supporting the peace process, possibly representatives of the UN and ASEAN, as well as representatives of the Government of Myanmar and the armed groups.
The seminar will be convened by the Kimmo Kiljunen, the Special Representative of Finland’s Foreign Minister to regional peace-mediation tasks, and the International Peace Support Group, the cooperation body for organisations supporting the peace process in Myanmar.
