Mozambique: Over 13,000 still in Gaza accomodation centres

Maputo (AIM) - A total of 13,548 people made homeless by the February floods in the southern Mozambican province of Gaza, are still living in government-run accommodation centres, because the local authorities face difficulties in moving them to resettlement areas.

Gaza provincial governor Eugenio Numaio told AIM that a shortage of tents is one of the main problems delaying resettlement.

He said that efforts are under way with several institutions to obtain more tents to provide provisional accommodation in resettlement areas while people build their definitive new homes.

He said the demarcation of plots of land for new housing is already happening. But despite these difficulties, Numaio was confident that resettlement is going well. He pointed out that the vast majority - over 90 per cent - of the 248,193 people who were displaced by the floods have already resettled.
