Morocco: A total of 1,089 Syrian Asylum-seekers Confirmed As Persons in Need of International Protection (Ministry)

The ad hoc commission, under the authority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, responsible for hearing asylum seekers, confirmed until January 2017 a total of 1,089 Syrian asylum seekers as persons in need of international protection.

In accordance with international law, the Moroccan authorities set up an ad hoc committee, under the authority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, responsible for the hearing of asylum seekers, pending the establishment of a new national asylum system, according to a statement by the delegate Ministry to the minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of Moroccans living abroad and Migration Affairs.

The same source said that on the initiative of HM King Mohammed VI, the Moroccan authorities have set up a National Immigration and Asylum Strategy since 2013, with a vision to ensure better integration of immigrants and management of migratory flows as part of a coherent, comprehensive, humanistic and responsible policy.

In addition to the various programs for the educational, cultural, social and economic integration of migrants of this the strategy, the program "Managing flows and combating trafficking in human beings" responds to the objective of controlling migratory flows according to a humanistic strategy that is respectful of human rights. It also deals with the control of the number of irregular immigrants present in the territory.

The conduct of the exceptional operation of the regularization of the situation of stay of foreigners is a major action of this program.

The Kingdom of Morocco, in accordance with the High Instructions of HM the King, fully assumes its responsibilities towards the Syrian populations, said the statement, noting that "its neighbor Algeria must also assume its political and moral responsibility with regard to this situation."

"It is immoral and unethical to manipulate the moral and physical distress of these people, to sow trouble on the borders between Morocco and Algeria," the source added, pointing out that such practices are only aimed at generating massive and uncontrollable migratory flows to Morocco and undermining its migratory policy, which has earned acclaim by international organizations and specialized bodies of the United Nations, governments and diplomatic representations, civil society organizations specialized in the support for migrants and refugees, as well as NGOs working in the field of human rights.

"This is all the more distressing at a time when the international community is calling for a Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration," deplored the Ministry.
