Silver Spring, Maryland--As World Refugee Day is commemorated on June 20, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) office in Moldova has been praised for its refugee assistance program.
"We are very thankful for ADRA's continued support of the refugee community in Moldova. ADRA has been a very trusted partner, and we hope that our cooperation will develop further," states Mr. Oldrich Andrysek, Moldova chief for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Earlier this year, ADRA Moldova distributed gift boxes to more than 100 refugee children. The gift boxes were part of a project organized by ADRA's office in Germany. German school children packed the boxes with an assortment of items such as colored pencils, markers, notebooks, candy, winter hat and gloves, toys, and children's books. During 2002, warm clothing also has been provided to several hundred adult refugees.

While it is estimated that 70 percent of refugees in Moldova are from Chechnya, Moldova shelters refugees from a number of other countries, including Afghanistan and Sudan. ADRA Moldova's refugee assistance program has been in operation for four years.
