Tropical Storm Bopha (26W) Update 1

What are the current conditions?

Tropical Storm Bopha (26W) has developed southwest of Pohnpei and southeast of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia.

It is currently a weak Category 1 (BoM System) tropical cyclone with winds of 35 knots near the centre. It is moving westnorthwest at about 2 mph and is expected to steadily intensify overnight and turn more to the west. Over the weekend, the system may develop into a Category 4 tropical cyclone.

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the following locations in the Federated States of Micronesia:

Nukuoro, Pohnpei State
Puluwat, Chuuk State
Likunor, Chuuk State
Losap, Chuuk State
Chuuk Lagoon Islands, Chuuk State

What are the likely effects caused by Tropical Storm Bopha?

In the next 24 to 48 hours Chuuk state will see some heavy rain and squally winds with winds around marginal gale force Thursday night or early Friday.

On its current path the islands of Yap state are at risk in the longer term - late this weekend or early next week.
