Emergency aid for typhoon disaster in Micronesia

1. On July 9 (Tue), the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency assistance in kind (10 tents, 1,000 blankets, 700 jerry cans and 10 electric generators) equivalent to approximately 10 million yen to the Government of Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), which has sustained damages from a typhoon.

2. The Typhoon "Chataan" swept across the Chuuk State in the FSM from June 30 to July 3, causing large-scale landslides and other human and material damages mainly to the Weno Island, where is the capital of the Chuuk State: more than 80 people dead or missing, more than 100 injured, about 10,000 afflicted in total, about 1,500 houses partially or totally destroyed, damages to agricultural products, roads, and other materials.

3. At present the afflicted people whose houses were destroyed by landslides and other disaster caused by the typhoon live in a difficult situation as evacuees. The Government of the FSM, while conducting relief operations of its own, needs further assistance from the international community and on July 8 (Mon) requested emergency aid from the Government of Japan.

4. The Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view, in light of the seriousness of the disaster and the friendship between Japan and the FSM.
