1. ON 28-29 JANUARY, TROPICAL CYCLONE FIRINGA HIT MAURITIUS WITH WINDS OF UP TO 190 KM/H.

2. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS:

- 125 HOUSES DESTROYED
- COMMUNICATIONS CUT OFF.
- QUALITY OF WATER DETERIORATED DUE TO DAMAGE OF PURIFICATION SYSTEMS.
- LARGE AREAS REMAIN WITHOUT ELECTRICITY.
- PRELIMINARY ESTIMATES OF DAMAGE AMOUNT TO US DOLLARS 58 MILLION.

1. UNDRO REPRESENTATIVE REPORTED FOLLOWING INFO ON CYCLONE FIRINGA WHICH PASSED ABOUT 50 KM N-W OF MAURITIUS BETWEEN 8 PM OF JAN 28 AND 8 AM OF 29 JAN '89:

- CASUALTIES LIMITED TO ONE DEAD AND 507 INJURED DUE TO GOVT EFFECTIVE EARLY WARNING SYSTEM AND DISASTER MITIGATION PREPAREDNESS.

- 75 TO 95 PERCENT OF CROPS DESTROYED AND 10 TO 15 PERCENT OF SUGAR CANE CROP SERIOUSLY DAMAGED. ALSO 5000 MT OF SUGAR IN STORAGE LOST.

- SEVERE DAMAGE TO FORESTRY ESTATES RECORDED.

- WATER AND ELECTRICITY SUPPLY DISRUPTED BY STRONG WINDS, HAVE BEEN PARTIALLY RESTORED WITH UTILIZATION OF STAND-BY GENERATORS. TELEPHONE LINES STILL CUT.

- DAMAGE TO AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION AND INFRASTRUCTURE ESTIMATED AT US DLRS 60 MILLION.

2. WHILE GOVT DOES NOT WISH TO LAUNCH INTERNATIONAL APPEAL IT DID INDICATE THAT INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE WOULD BE WELCOME.

3. LIST OF REQUIRED MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE THROUGH UNDRO UPON REQUEST.

1. ON 8 FEB UNDRO/UNDP REPRESENTATIVE REPORTED FOLLOWING INFO FROM PORT LOUIS:

- 844 HOUSES DESTROYED, OF WHICH 211 AT MOKA/FLACQ, 254 AT PAMPLEMOUSSES, 55 AT PORTLOUIS, 75 AT GRAND PORT/LES HAUTS DES PLAINES WILHEMS AND 140 AT SAVANNES/LES BAS DES PLAINES WILHEMS.

2. UNDRO COORDINATOR, IN RESPONSE TO THE EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE REQUEST SPECIFICALLY ADDRESSED BY THE GOVT OF MAURITIUS TO UNDRO, HAS AUTHORIZED IMMEDIATE ALLOCATION OF US DLRS 10,000 FOR URGENT PURCHASE OF WATER BLADDERS AND MOTOR SAWS. THESE ITEMS WILL BE TRANSPORTED, FREE OF CHARGE, FROM ROME TO PORT LOUIS, BY AIR MAURITIUS.

3. WHILE GOVT DOES NOT WISH TO LAUNCH INTERNATIONAL APPEAL IT DID INDICATE THAT INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE WOULD BE WELCOME.

4. LIST OF REQUIRED MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE THROUGH UNDRO UPON REQUEST.
