Highlights

  1. UNICEF, with the other agencies of the UN system and partners, is supporting the Government of Mauritania to respond to multiple crises:
  • a nutrition crisis with as many as 12,600 cases of severe acute malnutrition (SAM);

  • over 90,000 refugees from Mali; and - preparedness in case Cholera reaches Mauritania from neighbouring counties.

  1. UNICEF requests $12.74 million to respond to both crises and has received $6.43 million, leaving a funding gap of 49.5%. This request is part of the June 2012 UNICEF Humanitarian Action Update (HAU) – Children in Crisis in the Sahel.

  2. The emergency response is integrated with the development programme with the goals of saving lives and strengthening the resilience of families, communities and systems in Mauritania. To support this, multi-sectorial teams are working in the field on the response.
