NOUAKCHOTT, Aug 29, 2009 (AFP) - A child was killed and more than 3,500 people were left homeless when heavy rains caused houses to collapse in southwestern Mauritania, state media reported on Saturday.

The child, whose age was not given, died when a house collapsed in the village of Rgheiwatt due to the rains that hit the region over the course of the last two days, according to the Mauritanian News Agency.

Some 3,500 people were homeless after their houses collapsed on the outskirts of the nearby city of Rosso and have been relocated, the report said.

A number of neighbourhoods around the capital Nouakchott have also been affected by the flooding.
