Highlights

  • WFP, under its Special Operation, finalized the handover of logistics assets developed during the 2014 – 2015 Ebola response to the Government.

  • The refugee population continued to decline due to the repatriation exercises conducted by the UNHCR.
    By the end of June, around 15,000 refugees remained. WFP continues to provide food assistance to the refugees with reduced rations.

  • Japanese Bilateral project’s mid-year review exercise took place from 9 to 19 August. The delegation visited lowland fields and interacted with beneficiaries, cooperating partners, government officials and WFP staff.

Operational Updates

  • Gender Campaign: The Gender campaign, launched on 30 June, marked the beginning of campaign activities at the country office and sub-offices level.
    Activities included a general staff meeting, discussion of emails and posters.

  • School Feeding: In March, WFP expanded the number of students benefiting from the school feeding programme from 127,000 to 300,000 in nine counties.
    The doubling of students receiving protein rich daily school meals has encourage enrolment, retention and academic progress.

  • WFP and the Ministry of Education had a two-day working session to review the 2015/2016 Joint Plan of Action for implementing School Feeding and to plan the one for 2016/2017 (or the next one). The joint review and planning exercise was held in CARI, Bong County and was attended by 27 staff of both entities from the central and county levels.

  • Home-Grown School Feeding (HGSF): Following the expansion of the School Feeding target, WFP and partners including the Ministry of Education launched the pilot phase of the HGSF pilot in Nimba County to ensure the sustainability of the programme.

  • Refugee Operation Evaluation: An independent evaluation of the Refugee Operation to support Cote d’Ivoire refugees, was conducted in March. The findings informed the design of the next phase of the operation which is expected to start after July 2016.

  • Refugee Repatriation: WFP Liberia has initiated a budget revision to extend the project from the end of July to end December 2016. Monthly food distributions continue to be ongoing in the camps based on realtime refugee statistics.
