Norway doubles humanitarian support for Jordan

‘Norway will double its humanitarian assistance to Jordan, bringing this to a total of around NOK 100 million in 2015. Jordan has received more than 600.000 refugees from Syria, which is creating a major pressure on the Jordanian community. Therefore, we will increase our assistance to Jordan,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.

Mr Brende is visiting Jordan today together with the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Norway. Jordan has received more than 600.000 Syrian refugees since the conflict in Syria started in 2011. Jordan is under huge pressure as it tries to provide basic services to its own population while seeking to meet the refugees’ many needs – ranging from shelter to education.

‘It is vital for stability in the region that the international community continues to support Syria’s neighbouring countries, which are hosting millions of Syrian refugees. In line with the Norwegian Government’s focus on education for children in conflict areas, we will give priority to education programmes in our increased support for Jordan,’ said Mr Brende.

Norway’s support for Jordan in 2014 will total around NOK 50 million, and the majority of this is earmarked for education. Norway’s support for humanitarian efforts in Syria and its neighbour Lebanon will also be maintained at a high level in 2015.
