Winter relief underway: Medair racing to shelter Syrian and Iraqi families

What a heartbreaking year it has been for families in northern Iraq and Syria. Terrible violence has forced millions to flee from their homes. It’s the worst refugee crisis the world has seen in decades. Displaced families are taking shelter where they can but many lack protection from the rain and the cold. Soon they will be hit with winter winds, rain, snow, and freezing temperatures. When you visit refugee settlements, you see little children everywhere you turn. These children need a safe, warm place to spend the winter. Your gifts are helping make that happen for children in Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq. Here are just a few of the projects our teams are working on right now:

Lebanon

We are providing warmer shelter to 5,000 families with winterisation kits that include better insulation for their tents. We are giving complete shelter-building kits and vital household supplies to newly arriving families, with a long list of relief items including heavy vinyl sheeting, wood, tools, mattresses, and blankets. Through drainage and gravel-laying projects, we are transforming dozens of flood-prone farmers’ fields where refugees live into safer, cleaner places for children to spend the winter.

Jordan

We are providing 700 families in northern Jordan with “sealing-off” kits to winterise their shelters, along with shelter repair kits to make their dwellings warmer. These families are also receiving safe water kits that include water filters, treatment tabs, and storage containers.

Iraq

Medair is helping very vulnerable families who have taken refuge in unfinished buildings with no windows, no doors, and sometimes no walls. We are providing nearly 1,500 families with blankets, mattresses, pillows, buckets, soap, and plastic sheeting to cover the windows against the cold. With your ongoing support, we will provide the same 1,500 families (9,000 people) with what they need to stay warm and survive the winter, including shelter-building supplies, insulation, stoves, blankets, and winter clothes. Get involved today to help a child stay safe and warm this winter. Please make a donation while there’s still time.
