EU scales up aid to Iraqi population

The EU has increased its humanitarian aid to Iraq, with an additional €3 million going towards assisting displaced populations. With the onset of winter, the funding will support communities to prepare for harsh weather conditions, through the distribution of blankets and thermal mats, and the provision of emergency shelter solutions.

The funding will bring vital assistance to hundreds of thousands of people in Iraq: internally displaced and refugees in neighbouring countries as well as their host communities and those who are trapped in areas of intense fighting with special emphasis on vulnerable groups such as women, children and the elderly.

This is the third such top-up in EU humanitarian funding since June, bringing the total humanitarian support to Iraq in 2014 to €20 million. The European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) is actively working with humanitarian partner organisations to bring vital assistance to populations in need. Assistance is being distributed through UN agencies, international organisations and international NGOs.
