Bushehr Earthquake OCHA Flash Update no. 2, 10 April 2013
The Iranian Red Crescent Society has announced the rescue operation is officially terminated.
The death toll is 35 persons (8 children), with some 800 people injured, of whom 80 have been hospitalized in Khormoj city hospital.
The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) is responding with 40 search and rescue teams (10 from Kerman Province, 5 from Isfahan, 10 from Fars, 5 from Kohkilouyeh, and 10 from Hormozgan) and 4 assessment teams. All emergency teams have now returned to their areas of origin.
Preliminary damage assessment: 92 villages affected, from which 27 villages have received some disaster assistance. The most affected villages are Kaki (population of 2,701), Shanbeh (1,746) and Sana (1,253). In addition, two kilometres of water pipelines and 18 water tanks were destroyed. The Iranian Provincial authorities estimate the total damage caused by the earthquake at US$600 million.
The response is now focusing on the provision of relief and the temporary settlement of the affected population. Around 1,000 people are currently sheltered in tents, while the rest are in mosques, schools and with family and friends.
The IRCS has dispatched the following relief items: 1,000 tents, 2,500 tarpaulins, 4,500 blankets, 10,000 food packages, and 24,000 bottles of water.
No request for international assistance is expected.
