Tzu Chi Taiwan provides medical assistance to quake survivors in Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Taiwan Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation dispatched two medical teams to the quake-stricken area in Central Java, Indonesia. After receiving an urgent request for support from Tzu Chi Indonesian chapter , the Taiwan headquarters quickly recruited medical personnel from Tzu Chi's hospitals in Taiwan and from Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA). The first team with 18 medical personnel left Taiwan on May 30, to join up with other TIMA members from Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia in quake-hit Yogyakarta. Tzu Chi's second medical team with 25 members departed from Taiwan on June 3, and has been continuing the work of the first medical team since.
Tzu Chi's medical personnel stationed at Bantul Senopati Hospital and RS Umum Daerah Jogja Hospital to provide medical services. After arriving at the hospitals, Tzu Chi’s team immediately began performing surgeries. They reported that due to the lack of medical equipment and post-operative care, the wounds of many injured survivors became inflamed. Some survivors became paralyzed as a result of such lack.
Tzu Chi’s medical team also collaborated with BKKBN (Indonesian Population and Family Information Network). The government-owned health agency allowed Tzu Chi the use of a mobile bus, which is equipped with surgery kits and electrical generators, allowing for 20 operations.
The table below shows data of medical treatment from Tzu Chi relief team.
