Medical supplies timely reached Manado, Sulawesi Utara Indonesia
MERCY Malaysia Medical Relief and Assessment team, consisting of team leader, Rossimah Mohamed, Deputy Head of Relief Operation, Hew Cheong Yew, Volunteer Management Officer and Dr Abdul Malik Abdul Ghaffor arrived in Manado on 24 February 2006, and were met by Indonesian Red Crescent Society (BSMI), our local partner there.
Based on BSMI report for 25 February 2006, there are confirmed 33 death and 60 injuries due to the flood that began on 13 February 2006 and landslides, which has accumulated an estimated loss of 80 million Rupiah in Manado.
MERCY Malaysia provided medical supplies to local medical team which reached them in time as medicines were insufficient. Medical supplies included primary care medicines, antibiotics and vitamins. Following the assessment, MERCY Malaysia found that medical needs of Manado residents are well met; their District Health Centre (PUKESMAS) and other local health institutions are still functioning, and local NGOs are well established to provide other assistance.
MERCY Malaysia Medical Relief and Assessment team returned to Malaysia on 27 February 2006 but will continue to closely monitor the situation.
