The International Federation is launching an appeal to assist more than 4,000 Indonesian families, seriously affected by the earthquake which hit the eastern part of Sulawesi and neighbouring islands last week. The tremor, which measured 7.3 on the Richter scale and was followed by several aftershocks and a tidal wave, flattened some remote villages and left approximately 170,000 people homeless. Representatives from the Federation and the Indonesian Red Cross Society carried out an initial assessment in cooperation with local authorities. Based on their findings, the Red Cross will provide people with relief items such as shelter materials and kitchen utensils.
