ICMC part of combined response to tsunami disaster
This joint working will combine the relief and recovery efforts of all the organizations involved, and cover the first emergency projects in Indonesia. A Special Operations Appeal, launched by Caritas Internationalis, a confederation of 162 Catholic relief, development and social service organizations throughout the world, aims to provide funding for this integrated work in Indonesia but other contributions will also be needed.
The Archdiocese of Medan, in North Sumatra, will convene the working group for Indonesia. At the request of Caritas Internationalis, the US-based Catholic Relief Services (CRS) will facilitate financial administration, reporting, and targeted institutional capacity support to selected participating agencies in Indonesia. This support role will be undertaken in partnership and co-operation with Caritas Germany and a national and international working group. Cardinal Julius Darmaatmadja, President of the Bishops' Conference of Indonesia, highlighted the importance of the task and the need for coordinated efforts, clear priorities and accountability. "Performance should be transparent and responsible", he said during the first coordination meeting.
The following partners currently constitute the group involved in the combined response in Indonesia:
- Bishops' Conference of Indonesia (KWI)
- Archdiocese of Medan
