Major flooding sparked by an overflow from the Karang Mumus Dam inundated hundreds of houses at Gunung Lingai village in Sungai Pinang district, Samarinda, East Kalimantan, on Wednesday.

The flooding also hit Bengkuring housing complex at Sempaja Selatan subdistrict in North Samarinda district.

“The water started inundating the area on Wednesday afternoon and at night it kept flowing,” said Lukman, one of Bengkuring residents, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Aside from the residential area, the flooding also affected major thoroughfares in Samarinda at a depth of 20 to 50 centimeters.

Dadang Airlangga, head of Samarinda Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), said that he had not yet been able to make an inventory of the number of the houses flooded on Tuesday.

“We haven't got enough data on Tuesday's flooding. Today [Wednesday] the flooding spread to Griya Mukti residential area. We've already sent teams to help the flood victims,” he said.
