India: SITUATION REPORT1 - TAMIL NADU FLOODS - DECEMBER 8, 1330 hours

A. HIGHLIGHTS:

- Sustained heavy rains over the course of several weeks have resulted in water logging and flooding across several coastal districts of the state of Tamil Nadu. The situation further deteriorated following continuous heavy rainfall between the 4th and 6th of December 2010.

- The districts affected are Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Villupuram, Tuticorin, Tirunelvelli, Pudukottai and Ramanthapuram

- According to the latest estimates available 203 lives have been lost across the state, in incidents related to the heavy rainfall and flooding. Furthermore, an estimated 8,000 huts have been fully damaged and 40,000 huts have been partially damaged. These figures are expected to rise further. Around 3.2 lakh houses have also been affected.

- Around 5,068 livestock have been lost and 15 lakh acres of standing agricultural crop has been submerged.
