CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Monday sanctioned Rs 5 crore to Andhra Pradesh towards providing relief to people affected by cyclone Hudhud.

In a statement, chief minister O Panneerselvam said, "Tamil Nadu has been in the forefront in helping states affected by floods and other natural calamities. In keeping with that the government has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for Andhra Pradesh."

The government will also send transformers and power equipment to Andhra Pradesh based on a request from chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu. "Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu spoke to me and sought power equipment to replace the damaged poles and transformers. Based on this, a review meeting was conducted in which power minister Nathan Viswanathan, housing minister R Vaithilingam, highways minister Edappadi K Palanisamy and other ministers and secretaries of the respective departments participated," said Panneerselvam.

Tami Nadu will send 100 transformers, 5,000 electric poles, 10,000 insulators and other equipment to restore power supply in the affected areas of Andhra Pradesh.

The state will also send a team of highway officials and workers to repair the damaged roads. "The team will be equipped with electric axes and generators to supply power to these axes," said the chief minister invoking former chief minister J Jayalalithaa's name at the beginning of the press release as well as at the end.

It may be recalled that Jayalalithaa sanctioned Rs 5 crore to Jammu and Kashmir, which was ravaged by unprecedented floods in September.
