Hungary: Actual flood situation 18 Mar 2001
The Tisza is culminating on a long portion near Tiszaf=FCred. The forecasts for the Hungarian reach of the Tisza foreseen a water level over the preparedness level III., but under the water levels of the past 3 years. The Szamos and Tur rivers are subsiding on the whole reach. A smaller rise on the Bodrog is expected to increase the water level slightly.
On the river Tisza and on the defense lines of its tributaries - altogether on a length of 205 km - there is extreme flood protection alertness and flood protection alertness grade III. on 493 km. Protection alert is maintained over an overall length of 1269 km.
In the Northern Plain and the Middle Plain 12 water associations perform inland water protection activities with 209 persons and 49 vehicles. The nature of the protection activities: inland water pumping (with 43 pumps), channel maintenance, removal of vegetation (rank grass, widage), cleaning of monuments. The quantity of water pumped daily is 418.000 ml. 13.533 hectare of land is flooded by inland water. The cost of daily protection against inland water has reached 3,3 million HUF, the overall expenses until now have reached 51,5 million HUF.
Traffic situation:
The traffic restrictions ordered in the regions of the counties Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Borsod-Aba=FAj-Zemplén and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok are still valid. On the portion of the Tisza over Szolnok only the ferry between Lónya and Tiszamogyorós is functioning. The speed limits concerning the railroad traffic are still valid.
Protection works:
Concerning the draining of the high water quantity still present in the Beregi lowlands the Hungarian-Ukrainian talks have continued with the meeting of water-experts.
To aid the flooded settlements in the Ukraine on the Hungarian side much has been done. A 1000 meter long auxiliary dam has been built on the right side of the channel Csaronda near Tiszakerecseny. This does not have any influence the Hungarian settlements.
In Ukraine there are 10 high capacity pump in readiness to help with the draining of water in the villages. The Hungarian National Directorate General for Disaster Management organised additionally 19 pumps. We aided the Ukrainian protection works also by providing 150.000 sandbags.
To restrict the water flowing from Hungarian territory to the Ukraine the Hungarian Directorate General for Water Management continued engineering works in the region of TiszaKerecseny, Tiszaadony, and Barabás. The ruptures of the highway 41. near Tákos and between Tákos and Csaroda had been closed temporary. On Tákos the pumping of water had been ceased. The work continued with the maintenance of the dams, the sand depos and the temporary roads leading to the dams. On the Hungarian side the size of the flooded area decreased because of the lower water-quantity flowing through the highway 41. Pumping of water out of the flooded parts of Jánd and Gergelyiugornya continued. Works continued in order to reinforce the temporary defenses built over the ruptures in the dams near Tarpa.
Draining of water continued through the dikes of Tiszakóród and Kerekes from the right side of the river Tur, flooded due to the rupture of the dam of the Tisza in Ukraine. In the T=FAr-Szamos region near Sonkád works continued to finalize the repair of the damaged portions of the dams. Because of the water level decrease of the Tisza, the flow-back from the flooded areas is continuos, and so the temporary defense lines built for the settlements are being demolished. On the defense line in the region of Taktaköz dam maintenance and the draining of leaking water continued.
On the middle-Tisza part, with the advancing of the flood wave flood incidents occur, but preparations have been made in advance.

The public health situation:
The experts have stated, that from the 41 samples taken from different locations, the water is undrinkable at Tiszaadony, Tiszavid, Tivadar, Tákos, Vémosatya, Márokpapi.
Epidemic situation:
Vaccination of the people working and living in the flooded area continued. No epidemic diseases were reported. Disinfecting and painting of the former places accepting the dislocated persons has been finished. In the schools, which have been disinfected and repainted, teaching will begin on Monday.
Environment protection:
Sampling of the rivers Tisza and Bodrog continues as planned. There is no significant difference between the content of the water samples taken, both rivers water quality is between good and excellent.
The military forces built a temporary bridge over the rupture cut into the road between Gergelyiugornya and Jánd.
The Police ensured the return of the military forces withdrawn from the region to their bases, from Nyíregyháza to Pécs and to Szombathely. In the missions related to the flood the personnel of the National Police Command participated with 52 persons and 32 vehicles.
Protection works in the counties concerned:
In the county Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg the rain hindered the disinfecting with chloride of lime. The roads of Hetefejércse, Márokpapi, Tarpa, Gulács, Barabás, Vámosatya and Gergelyiugornya had been disinfected.
12 draining-trucks and 3 special sewer cleaning trucks of the Conduit Works of Budapest continued cleaning the sewer purger and drainage network on Sunday at Vámosatya, Gelénes, Tákos and Tarpa.
So far, altogether 3130 houses, 730 yards, 168 streets, 3 cemeteries and 13 farms have been disinfected. Today the disinfecting of Tákos, Gulács, Tarpa, Gergelyiugornya, Vámosatya and Jánd continues.
The electricity supply is assured on every settlement, the partial disconnection of the flooded parts has been done.
In the villages still accepting the dislocated persons the teaching in the schools will begin hopefully at 22 March. This concerns 6 settlements.
At Kispalád 9, in Vámosoroszi 2 houses are considered to be dangerous, the demolition has been ordered. The housing of the families is ensured.
The 5 tonnes of Calcium-hypochloride to be transferred to Ukraine by the Ecumenical Service is being stored at Vásárosnamény.
In the county Borsod-Aba=FAj-Zemplén the main activities concern public protection. The settlements concerned: Bodrogkereszt=FAr, Csobaj, Pr=FCgy, Taktabáj, Taktakenéz, Tiszatardos, Tokaj, Tiszaladány, Tiszaluc. According to the recommendations of the Northern Direction of Water Management, the Defense Committee of the County is beginning to withdraw personnel from the protection works from the region of Taktaköz and Bodrogköz.
In the county Heves the settlements concerned are: Sarud, Tiszanána, Kisköre, Tarnaszentmiklós, Pély, Újlorincfalva, Poroszló. On these settlements personnel immediately available for protection work are 350 persons, if needed at a higher level of preparedness further 350-350 civilians and civil protection personnel can be mobilized.
At the Directorate for Disaster Management of the county Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok the Information Center operates with partial readiness, processing the data on the dislocated persons.
Rehabilitation and restoring:
The experts of damage assessment processed 3476 cases until now and continue the work. Houses considered dangerous are being prepared for demolition.
In the protection works 2.762 persons and 618 vehicles participated, from which 818 persons of the disaster management and civil protection, 250 firemen, 230 policemen. 860 military personnel work in the region.
