Haiti – Floods (Haitian Civil Protection Department, DG ECHO) (ECHO Daily Flash of 24 April 2017)
Heavy rains in the South Department from 20 to 23 April have caused severe damages and affected areas that have not yet recovered from the passage of cyclone Matthew.
Local authorities report 2 deaths and several houses destroyed due to fast flooding. In Port Salut town, 5 000 households have been affected and a national road bridge connecting the town with the rest of the coast of the South Department has collapsed, leaving several Matthew-affected municipalities without road access. The city of Les Cayes (South Department capital) has also been flooded. Important losses in crops, livestock and fishery have been reported, jeopardizing livelihoods recovery activities focused on the most vulnerable in Matthew-affected areas. In some localities, damages on water supply systems have been reported.
Local authorities in Les Cayes have distributed feeding kits for 500 families. IOM, Haitian Red Cross, OCHA and local authorities distributed plastic sheeting to 200 households. In addition, the Ministry of Public Works has mobilized some heavy machinery equipment to improve access to flooded areas.
