Federal Development Ministry provides 500,000 euros to help the people hit by the floods in Africa
"The worst flooding has been in Ghana, Uganda and Sudan. Dozens of people lost their lives in the rising waters. In these three countries alone, more than 1 million people are now homeless. Hundreds of thousands of people are without a roof over their heads; over vast expanses of land harvests have been destroyed by the torrential rains - and with them people's means of survival," said Federal Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul, who went on to say that the "assistance which we are providing will help ensure that this disastrous weather does not lead to a famine disaster. The first step will therefore be to provide funds which can be used in Ghana and Uganda to supply the people hit by the disaster with food in the short term."
The Federal Development Ministry will follow the situation in the flood areas very carefully and provide additional funds if needed, the Minister added.
Despite the enormous hardship that people are facing, there is a positive side to the situation: some countries have managed to respond efficiently to the disaster, using their own resources to get things under control for the moment.
