TECHNICAL CHRONOLOGY OF CDRS ACTIONS

The rescue center on Santa Cruz was set up and equipped with cages to hold the affected birds, as well as all the equipment and medication necessary to treat them. The center was set up using the basic manuals on how to set up a treatment center and how to treat affected birds, and other advice sent by the South African National Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds, who were active in the clean up of the "Treasure" oil spill in South Africa last year. At the moment the Charles Darwin Foundation in Quito is searching for the most effective detergents to clean off bunker fuel without removing all of the bird's natural oil. At the same time experiments are being conducted to find suitable chemicals among the products available here in Galapagos.

Charles Darwin Research Station researchers returned to Santa Fe in its vessel "Spondylus" to continue the surveys. In addition to these surveys, each day as the boats with survey teams traveled back and forth from Santa Cruz, a tally of birds sighted has been kept.
