The Methodist Church from all over Fiji donated about 500 cartons of relief items; mostly clothing, beddings and mats to the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) on Monday.
Ministry of Provincial Development and NDMO’s emergency planning and coordinating officer, Samuela Kanainaliwa, while receiving the relief items, said Government was thankful and grateful for the assistance by the church.
“We are thankful to all church leaders and members for the kind support they have shown towards their brothers and sisters who have been affected by the flood,” Mr Kanainaliwa said.
Minister for Muanikau Methodist Circuit, Jeremaia Waqainabete said the church looked forward to the opportunity to assist flood victims of Fiji irrespective of their race and religion and whether they were members of the church or not.
“It’s high time we cross all barriers such as race and religion, come out of our own cocoon and see our nation as a united Fiji in a bigger picture,” Mr Waqainabete said.
He added this was part of the Methodist Church’s social welfare program and they were expecting some more relief items to come in soon.
“We will be receiving about 90 bags of root crops mainly from Vanua Levu and Taveuni,” Mr Waqainabete
“Some overseas partners such as Great Britain, New Zealand and Australia have also financially contributed to this while assistance from USA is yet to come.”
The Methodist Church is also trying to look after the welfare of its own members who were affected in the March floods.
