UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
29 NOVEMBER 1990

1. ON WEDNESDAY 28 NOV TROPICAL CYCLONE 'SINA' HIT VITI LEVU (MAIN ISLAND OF FIJI) AND THE LAU GROUP. THE CYCLONE IS PRESENTLY MOVING OUT OF FIJI GROUP. UNDRO HAS BEEN/IS MONITORING SITUATION THROUGH ITS SOUTH PACIFIC PROJECT OFFICE AND UNDP/UNDRO RESREP AND WITH ASSISTANCE OF AODRO OF AUSTRALIA.

2. GOVT INTENDS TO ASSESS DAMAGE AS SOON AS WEATHER CONDITIONS PERMIT. NATIONAL EMSEC (EMERGENCY SERVICES COMMITTEE) WARNED OF POSSIBLE FLOODING IN NAVAU AREA.

3. NO REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE RECEIVED BY UNDRO AS OF 28 NOV.

1. FIELD SURVEYS CARRIED OUT FOLLOWING TYPHOON 'SINA', WHICH HIT 27/28 NOVEMBER, SHOW DAMAGE IN SECTORS OF WESTERN, EASTERN, AND CENTRAL DIVISIONS WHILE NORTHERN DIVISION LEFT UNHARMED. MORE THAN 600 HOUSES REPORTED DESTROYED AND SAME NUMBER DAMAGED. NO CASUALTIES REPORTED OR LOSS OF LIVESTOCK. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO ROOT CROPS INDICATED ESPECIALLY TO SUGAR CANE. EARLY ESTIMATES OF TOTAL DAMAGE COST TO INFRASTRUCTURE: 1,5 MILLION USD, BUILDINGS: 2,4 MILLION USD, AGRICULTURE: 6,2 MILLION USD, TOTALLING OVER 10 MILLION USD.

2. PRIORITY NEEDS ARE TEMPORARY SHELTER FOR FAMILIES RENDERED HOMELESS AND FOOD RATIONS TO SUPPLEMENT SALVAGED CROPS. FIJI RED CROSS SUGGESTS TARPAULINS AND KITCHEN UTENSILS AS USEFUL ITEMS (AVAILABLE LOCALLY).

3. NATIONAL RESPONSE CARRIED OUT BY FIJI GOV EMERGENCY SERVICES COMMITTEE (EMSEC) AND FIJI RED CROSS. NO DISASTER SITUATION DECLARED BY GOV FOR ANY PART OF COUNTRY NOR REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE AS OF 03 DECEMBER.

4. UNDRO MONITORING SITUATION THROUGH ITS SOUTH PACIFIC PROJECT OFFICE AND UNDP/UNDRO RESREP.
