An agreement between the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) was signed today (October 25) for the establishment of a Pan African Liaison Office of the NRC with the African Union. Ethiopia’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Berhane Gebre-Christos said he appreciated NRC’s decision to open a liaison office in Addis Ababa and assured the Council that Ethiopia would extend its full support and cooperation. The NRC’s Regional Director for Horn of Africa and Yemen, Hassan Kire, expressed the Council’s gratitude for Ethiopia’s support; and the Norwegian Ambassador who attended the signing ceremony, hailed Ethiopia’s record of welcoming and accommodating thousands of refugees from neighboring countries. The Norwegian Refugee Council is an independent, humanitarian, non-governmental organization establish in 1946 to promote and protect the rights of refugees. It has a presence in 20 countries, and the NRC Ethiopia program started operations in June 2011 to assist Somali refugees in Dolo Ado in Somali Regional State and Eritrean refugees in camps in Shire in Tigrai Regional State.
