Farmers develop over 90,000 ha. land through irrigation

Dar February 18/2013 More than 247,000 farmers in West Gojjam Zone of Amhara State have developed over 90,000 hectares land through irrigation during the current dry season, the zonal agriculture department said. Irrigation development work process coordinator with the department, Befekadu Assefa said the farmers are cultivating different crops making use of ground and surface water. Befekadu said the plan was to develop over 100,000 hectares land and efforts will be exerted to develop the remaining. He said over 14 million quintals output is planned to be harvested from the stated area of land developed through irrigation. Nearly 47,000 quntals fertilizer and over 9,000 quintals select seeds are distributed among the farmers. Farmers engaged in irrigation development last year had harvested over 11 million quintals output from an area of over 86,000 hectares land.
