Key Events

  • With the rapidly increasing South Sudanese influx, existing camps are quickly reaching capacity. As of 28 March, UNHCR and ARRA registered some 87,000 South Sudanese asylum seekers in Ethiopia. The planning figure will likely be increased from 150,000 to 200,000 in the near future.

  • Initially planned for March, the dispatch of the second round of relief food assistance was postponed to April, pending decisions on the modalities of assistance. As of 26 March, 78 per cent of the first round of relief food assistance for 2014 was dispatched, and 13 per cent of the ration distributed to beneficiaries.

  • The Government and health partners prepared a national measles outbreak response plan for a measles vaccination campaign targeting 6.7 million children under-15 in 125 woredas.

  • With the onset of the seasonal rains in Somali region, the national water trucking request decreased from 78 trucks to 51 trucks on 25 March. As of the same date, fifty two trucks were operational, leaving a gap of 17 trucks in Afar (1), Amhara (3), Oromia (4) and Somali (9) regions.
