Six schools get water storage tanks from Digicel

The corporate community is still forthcoming with education support after Tropical Storm Erika.

Six schools across the island are now recipients of water tanks thanks to Digicel.

In the wake of Tropical Storm Erika a number of schools suffered water shortages and the tanks will meet that need.

Hon. Education Minister, Petter Saint Jean received the tanks on behalf of the Ministry of Education.

“Following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika, water systems across the island were severely compromised. This resulted in the temporary closure of a number of our schools especially those in the rural communities.

“I believe we all can appreciate that students could not have returned to classes at schools where there was no potable water for health and environmental concerns. While we were able to secure water tanks and provide bottled water to several of our schools, we continued to be challenged by the very high demand from our student population,” he clarified.

Digicel Country Manager, Vivek Sharma says the company has spent over half a million dollars to assist the country in its recovery efforts.

“In the last three months since the storm. Digicel has invested more than half a million dollars into various initiatives with communities, people, families and Government. This has taken the shape of aid, food, water, mattresses, stoves and other things wherever we have been able to make a difference.

“The presentation today is just another step in the same direction.”

The water tanks cost $11m.
