Protection

On 19 August 2014, UNHCR launched the final assisted voluntary repatriation of former Angolan refugees. At the end of September, a total of 3,959 returnees had returned back home. In total, UNHCR is aiming to repatriate 37,336 Angolans from Kinshasa, Bas-Congo and Katanga.

A rapid assessment has produced a new estimate of the total amount of Central African refugees living in and outside settlement context. A registration operation is currently ongoing. Once finalized, UNHCR will be able to publish the current number of CAR refugees living in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In 2014, UNHCR has so far repatriated a total of 4,495 Rwandan refugees and 850 Burundian refugees to their respective home countries. With support, UNHCR will finalize a biometric verification of Rwandan refugees in the DRC.

Furthermore, this year UNHCR has finalized the repatriation of 119,024 Congolese returnees coming from the Republic of Congo. The largest group of Congolese refugees living outside of the DRC can be found in Uganda, which number stands at 184,502.

From 19-22 September 2014, ‘Peace One Day’ was celebrated throughout the country. In Goma, UNHCR organized a marathon and distributed around 750 enhanced stoves in Nyiragongo and Rutshuru, in company of British actor Jude Law.
