1. ACCORDING TO UNDP/DHA RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE IN SAN JOSE LATEST ASSESSMENT REPORTS INDICATE:
  • 26 CANTONS AFFECTED
  • 3,874 HOUSES TOTALLY OR PARTIALLY DAMAGED
  • 150 BRIDGES AND 2 DAMS TOTALLY OR PARTIALLY DAMAGED
  • 95 SCHOOLS AFFECTED
2. THE GVT OF COSTA RICA HAS ISSUED A SECOND APPEAL THAT TAKES INTO ACCOUNT NEW NEEDS, AFTER ISOLATED AREAS HAVE BEEN REACHED BY RELIEF TEAMS. ACCORDING TO NATIONAL AUTHORITIES THE POST-DISASTER PHASE WILL CONTINUE FOR AN ESTIMATED ADDITIONAL PERIOD OF 45 DAYS, CONSIDERING THAT SEVERAL AFFECTED AREAS ARE STILL ISOLATED, THE VULNERABILITY OF THE INFRASTRUCTURES AND THE UNFAVORABLE WEATHER (RAINS CONTINUE TO FALL).

3. AID OPERATIONS CARRIED OUT BY LAND CONTINUE TO BE DIFFICULT SINCE MANY ROADS AND BRIDGES ARE TO BE REPAIRED. AIR RELIEF OPERATION CONTINUES. UNTIL NOW 5.958 FOAM MATTRESSES, 5,958 BLANKETS, 115,000 LTS OF WATER, 6 WATER TANKS OF 15,000 LTS EACH AS WELL AS MANY TONS OF FOOD SUPPLIES HAVE BEEN SENT TO THE AFFECTED AREAS. AS OF 9 AUGUST 1996 A TOTAL OF 305 RELIEF FLIGHTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT.

4. ACCORDING TO THE SECOND APPEAL ISSUED BY THE GVT OF COSTA RICA, THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE STILL NEEDED:

  • FOOD, KITCHEN SETS AND KITCHEN EQUIPMENT, PERSONAL HYGIENE ITEMS, MATS AND BLANKETS
  • WATER TANKS
  • BARGES AND OUTBOARD MOTOR BOATS
  • PORTABLE GENERATORS, TOOLS SETS, POWER SAWS, CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND TELECOMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT
  • EMERGENCY PEDESTRIAN BRIDGES

6. DHA IS READY TO SERVE AS CHANNEL FOR CASH CONTRIBUTIONS OF DONORS INTERESTED TO SUPPORT RELIEF ACTIVITIES FOR THE FLOOD-AFFECTED POPULATION. FUNDS ARE SPENT IN COORDINATION WITH RELEVANT ORGANIZATIONS OF THE UN SYSTEM, AND DHA PROVIDES DONOR GOVERNMENTS WITH WRITTEN CONFIRMATION ON THE UTILIZATION OF FUNDS CONTRIBUTED.
