As a leading exporter of both oil and coffee, Colombia continues to be adversely affected by world market fluctuations, and its economy is further hampered by on-going struggles with illicit drug production and political insurgent groups. The Medellin Rotary Club in Colombia has adopted a health assistance project designed to provide administrative and material support to a number of local, public health facilities in desperate need of financial aid and basic medical goods.
A children's hospital, a nursing home, and several rural clinics received Direct Relief's donation of adult and pediatric wheelchairs, hospital beds, laboratory equipment, dental operatories, and sterilizers. The Medellin Rotary Club's medical assistance efforts are chiefly supported through partnerships with Direct Relief and with the Conejo Valley Rotary Club in Conejo Valley, California.
