Yunnan Zhaotong Earthquake 3-year On Work Report

An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale took place in Ludian County of Zhaotong Prefecture, Yunnan Province on 3 August, 2014. About 4,000 people were killed or injured, with more than 210,000 houses collapsed or seriously damaged. Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) completed all relief activities in September 2014. It is expected that our reconstruction projects will be completed by the end of this year. The total number of beneficiaries is estimated at 200,000 person-times.

*To support reconstruction and disaster preparedness programmes, the HKRC has mobilized HKD 56.83 million from our “China Relief Fund”. The total budget for reconstruction and disaster preparedness programmes is about HKD 65.25 million.

HKRC-supported over 1,000 families with financial difficulties to rebuild their houses in Ludian County, Qiaojia County and Zhaoyang District. Most of them have moved in to their new home before August 2017.

Driven by local needs, HKRC supported the rehabilitation of community facilities, including water supply facilities, public toilets and village roads.

To ensure the progress and quality of construction work, HKRC engineers conducted regular on-site inspection.

HKRC engineer provided technical training on building safer houses to the local communities.

In parallel to the implementation of post-earthquake reconstruction and recovery projects, HKRC supported villages through collective disaster preparedness planning, organizing disaster preparedness education activities and first aid training.
