Situation Update

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake jolted the border of Ninglang County, Lijiang of Yunnan Province and Yanyuan County, Liangshan of Sichuan Province at 3:59 pm on 24 June. The situation in Yunnan was more serious.

According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs as of 10am on 25 June, the earthquake has affected 71,000 people in Yunnan and Sichuan. Four people died, 22 were severely injured and about 130 were hurt. 22,000 people were immediately evacuated and 3,800 houses were reported damaged.

The Red Cross Society of China Actions

The Red Cross Society of China had mobilized 300 tents, 2,000 quilts and RMB 100,000 for food-aid to the affected areas. Yunnan Red Cross had also allocated 400 quilts, 400 cotton clothes and 20 tents to the quake-hit areas immediately. Staff from Yunnan Red Cross was deployed to conduct need assessment and relief operation.

The Hong Kong Red Cross Actions

The Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) had mobilized 2,000 family kits (each include blanket, towel, clothes, mosquito net, slippers, bucket, dining utensils, etc.) with a total value of RMB 485,400, to the worst hit areas in Yunnan through Yunnan Red Cross. It is estimated that about 8,000 quake-affected people are benefited.

The HKRC is closely monitoring the situation in order to make further relief action plan. No appeal is launched for this operation at this moment.
