UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1

1. TYPHOON 'VERA' ON 17/09 HIT COASTAL PROVINCE OF ZHEJIANG AND CAUSED FLOODS WHICH AFFECTED 37 COUNTIES AND ISOLATED OVER 700 VILLAGES.

2. INITIAL ASSESSMENT OF DAMAGE DESCRIBED AS 162 PERSONS DEAD, 354 MISSING, 696 INJURED AND 7 MILLION PEOPLE AFFECTED. 392,000 PEOPLE WERE TRAPPED IN INACCESSIBLE AREAS.

3. 133,000 HOUSES COLLAPSED/DAMAGED. 430 KM COASTAL DYKES IN 4,000 PLACES AND 174 KM IRRIGATION DITCHES, AND 536 BRIDGES DESTROYED. 346,000 HA FARMLANDS AFFECTED AND 69,000 MT GRAIN WASHED AWAY. TOTAL ECONOMIC LOSS ESTIMATED AT US DLRS 350 MILLION.

1. MINISTRY CIVIL AFFAIRS REPORT THAT TYPHOON ALSO HIT JIANGSU PROVINCE WHERE 34 PERSONS DEAD, 2,000 INJURED, 590,000 HA OF FARMLAND AFFECTED. TOTAL ECONOMIC LOSSES IN ZHEJIANG AND JIANGSU PROVINCES ESTIMATED AT US DRLS 485,000.

2. GENERAL NEEDS IN TWO PROVINCES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

4. GOVT PREPARED TO ACCEPT INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE, BUT LIST OF EMERGENCY RELIEF REQUIREMENTS STILL TO BE CLARIFIED.
