Cash donations to quake-battered Yunnan reach 87 mln dollars

KUNMING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Southwest China's Yunnan Province has received more than 538 million yuan (87 million U.S. dollars) in cash donations as of Tuesday, nine days after a 6.5-Magnitude earthquake shook the province's Ludian County.

Additionally, donations of food, clothing and other relief materials were valued at 162 million yuan (26 million U.S. dollars), the provincial civil affairs bureau said in a press release Tuesday.

The donations were received through the provincial government, the city government of Zhaotong, the provincial charity, the Red Cross and the provincial federation of industry and commerce, it said.

The quake on Aug. 3, the strongest to hit Yunnan Province in 14 years, killed more than 600 people and destroyed 80,000 homes in Ludian and surrounding areas.
