COUNTRY STRATEGY

WFP-Burundi country strategy identifies three priority areas: (i) food and nutrition security; (ii) capacity development of government institutions; and (iii) humanitarian response action.

These priorities are implemented through a country programme and a PRRO which support food insecure and malnourished people through nutrition interventions, provision of school meals, food assistance to victims of climatic shocks and the empowerment of communities to create assets and improve food production. WFP is providing food assistance to refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, returnees and people expelled from neighbouring countries. In 2015, WFP plans to introduce new initiatives including cash and vouchers transfers, home grown school feeding, purchase for progress and food fortification. WFP has been present in Burundi since 1968.
