Federal Foreign Office provides humanitarian aid to flood victims in Brazil
The money will be mainly used to purchase emergency shelters, food, mattresses, blankets and drinking water. The Federal Foreign Office funds will go to German relief organizations active on the ground and will be deployed in close coordination with the German Consulate-General in Porto Alegre.
Floods and landslides in the Brazilian federal state of Santa Catarina have claimed the lives of at least 100 people, while many others are still missing. Almost 80,000 people had to be evacuated.
The current floods were described by the Brazilian authorities as the worst in 50 years. Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier pledged his Brazilian counterpart Celso Amorim German support.
There are many Brazilians of German descent in Santa Catarina and, in particular, in the region around the city of Blumenau, which has been badly damaged.
