Belize: NEMO Advisory - Tropical Storm Arthur Floods

NEMO strongly urges persons living along waterways country wide, and especially in Southern Belize, to be extremely cautious and aware of flooding which are occurring due to the heavy rain fall caused by Tropical Storm Arthur. Residents are advised to take precautionary measures to protect life and property and to move immediately to higher grounds for safety.

Motorists are advised to avoid using the Hummingbird Highway and to use extreme caution along other highways especially in areas where the roads may be flooded.

Since last night NEMO has activated a coordinated response especially in the mile 20 area on the Hummingbird Highway. This response includes Police, Coast Guard (boats) and BATSUB (helicopters) to initiate search and rescue and response to the needs of the people. Additionally, a volunteer Search and Rescue Team has left for the affected area.

The family of Mark Richard has lost their home and other residents of this area have been seriously affected.

NO BUSES are being allowed to leave Dangriga and Punta Gorda.
