Food Security and Agriculture Highlights Azerbaijan, January–March 2012
- Agricultural production is expected to be higher in 2012 than in 2011 for all main crops. Wheat production continues to increase and self-sufficiency is expected in 2015.
- The prevalence of poverty continued to decline from 9.1% in 2010 to 7.6% in 2011. The steady reduction of poverty in the 2000s is attributed to strong economic growth and increasing minimal wages and social transfers.
- Food prices remained stable between December 2011 and March 2012. They were on average 4% higher in January–March 2012 than during the same period of 2011.
- Cereal imports in January-March 2012 were 12% less than in the same period of 2011, but slightly above 2007/2011 average, while the import bill decreased by about 30%, reflecting declining prices on international markets.
