TROPICAL STORM BRET
DHA-GENEVA INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
7 AUGUST 1993

1. THIS MORNING, SATURDAY, 7 AUGUST, TROPICAL STORM BRET PASSED BETWEEN THE ISLANDS OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO AND SOUTH OF GRENADA. RAINS AND WINDS (WELL BELOW HURRICANE STRENGTH) CAUSED POWER CUTS. SOUTHERN END TOBAGO AND SOME HOUSES IN LOW-LYING CENTRAL
TRINIDAD SUFFERED MINOR DAMAGE DUE TO FLOODING AND FALLING OF TREES.

2. BRET NOW MOVING WEST WITH WINDS UP TO 50 MPH (85 KMPH). STORM WARNINGS IN EFFECT FOR VENEZUELAN COAST/ISLANDS, ARUBA, BONAIRE AND CURACAO.

3. SEVERAL PREPAREDNESS MEASURES WERE PREVIOUSLY ADOPTED IN EASTERN CARIBBEAN REGION IN ANTICIPATION OF STORM. IN TRINIDAD/ TOBAGO, GOVT ALERTED POPULATION THROUGH MEDIA, FLIGHTS AND PORT MOVEMENTS SUSPENDED, EMERGENCY SHELTER SET UP. NON-ESSENTIAL WORKERS EVACUATED FROM OFFSHORE DRILLING RIGS.

4. CARIBBEAN DISASTER EMERGENCY RESPONSE AGENCY (CDERA) MOBILIZED REGIONAL PREPAREDNESS MECHANISMS INVOLVING NATIONAL DISASTER COORDINATORS, DEFENSE FORCES, CARICOM, PAHO AND RED CROSS. FIVE ALERT AND INFORMATION MESSAGES ISSUED TO RELIEF OFFICIALS SINCE 5 AUGUST.

5. ON 6 AUGUST, UNDP/DHA REPRESENTATIVE IN BARBADOS CONVENED DONOR GROUP AND ACTIVATED SECURITY PLAN FOR UN STAFF.
