Highlights

  • WFP Algeria does not have sufficient funds to continue food distribution in January 2016.

Operational Updates

  • The monthly calorie intake for November reached a daily average of 2,200 kcal per ration, more than initially planned for the month. WFP distributed 125,000 rations consisting of 2 kg barley, 2 kg rice, 1.5 kg yellow-split peas, 1 kg sugar and 1 kg CSB+. Due to funding constraints, no wheat flour was available for distribution at the beginning of November. However, a new contribution received in November allowed WFP to locally purchase wheat flour (8 kg per ration allocated), providing a full commodity food ration for this month.

  • Under its nutrition element, WFP distributed daily rations of 100 g CSB+, 10 g vegetable oil, and 7.5 g sugar to treat 541 malnourished pregnant women and nursing mothers. WFP provided PlumpySup to 663 malnourished children, each receiving 92 g per day for 30 days. To prevent malnutrition, 7,690 pregnant women and nursing mothers received 1g of Micronutrient Powder for 30 days. In addition, as part of an initiative to improve pregnant women and nursing mother’s micronutrient intake and as an incentive to attend health screenings, 8,190 women received a daily ration of 38 g of dates, received as in-kind contribution.

  • In November, data collection for the WFP/UNHCR joint nutrition survey in collaboration with NGO partners and refugee authorities was completed. It will provide a snapshot of the current nutritional situation in the camps, with preliminary results expected early 2017. These surveys are important to monitor developments regarding refugees’ nutritional status, including indicators on malnutrition and anaemia. The last nutrition survey was conducted in 2012.
