Kabul, Afghanistan, 25 August 2014 – In the first of their decision-making sessions, Independent Election Commission (IEC) members have made decisions on the status of ballots cast at 3,645 polling stations from across the country.

In the presence of candidate agents, national and international observers, United Nations advisors and media, Commissioners reviewed evidence collected during the audit process, at the National Tally Center today.

Of the polling station results considered today, there was evidence of irregularities in 769 (approximately 21%) cases. In accord with criteria detailed in IEC Decision 33-1393, this led to invalidation of results from 72 stations and partial-invalidation (recount) of results from 697.

The impact of these decisions on the number of ballots to be included in the tally of election results will be availed to the public at a later date.

In the meantime, the decisions made today are reported in greater detail on the IEC website.

Invalid polling station results: http://www.iec.org.af/pdf/results-audittable/runoff-audit-invalided-25-A...

Partially invalid (recounted) polling station results: http://www.iec.org.af/pdf/results-audittable/runoff-audit-recount-25-Aug...

IEC Commissioners make their decisions after having reviewed audit findings, as recorded on checklist forms. Audit checklist forms, completed by Audit Teams during the audit process, indicate whether the contents of ballot boxes are valid, invalid or partially invalid, according to IEC Decision 33-1393. When they feel it is necessary, Commissioners may also examine individual audit checklist forms (electronic copy or original) for further clarification; or request advice from the United Nations.

Decision-making sessions will occur daily at the National Tally Center, from today (25 August) until all audit findings have been reviewed.

Lists of polling stations to be reviewed by Commissioners in subsequent sessions will be published on the IEC website, the day prior to their decision-making session: http://www.iec.org.af/runoff-audit

Following every decision-making session, the IEC will publish Commission decisions on its website at: http://www.iec.org.af/runoff-audit
