USAID launches two conflict management and mitigation projects

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has launched two new conflict management and mitigation projects: Community Initiatives for Common Understanding, and Inclusive Resource Management Initiative. The projects will focus on the Mid- and Far-Western regions of Nepal and address the root causes of conflict by bringing together representatives of conflicting groups to seek solutions in a safe space.

On May 31, 2013, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced that its Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Relief Assistance (OFDA) is providing $200,000 to support the Humanitarian Response Forum (HRF) in Cambodia. The HRF will strengthen emergency preparedness in the country by enhancing coordination and communication among humanitarian organizations based in Cambodia.

Students learn typhoon-resistant construction techniques in Majuro

USAID sponsored a week-long carpentry workshop at the College of Marshall Islands’ (CMI) Arrak campus in Majuro, Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) from March 4 to 8.

The workshop aimed to demonstrate techniques and materials that may be used to produce a durable, typhoon-resistant house that would provide protection from the effects of climate change.

In situations like this, USAID disaster response professionals have several key decisions to make — all with the goal of helping as many people as possible in the most rapid, efficient and effective way possible. Does it make sense to bring in food from the United States? Should we purchase food locally to distribute to those in need? Should we provide people the means to buy the food themselves?

CHALLENGE Sewage management is one of Afghanistan’s biggest environmental and health challenges. Currently, sewage from homes, businesses and industrial sites is discharged directly into the streets and local waterways. Most municipalities have limited or no treatment capacity and so the sewage inevitably enters the groundwater, contaminating wells and spreading disease.
