The United Nations Organisation against Drugs and Crime (UNODC) plays an important role in the fight against terrorism, illicit trafficking, organised crime and corruption. It is also mandated to contribute to strengthening the Security Sector Reform (SSR) through an integrated approach. In this interview, Pierre Lapaque, UNODC Regional Representative for West Africa, talks about the importance of SSR and provides an overview of the various SSR processes involved in the sub-region which continue to face new challenges that threaten peace and security.

Dakar, 13 Aout 2017 - Le Représentant spécial du Secrétaire général (RSSG) et Chef du Bureau des Nations Unies pour l'Afrique de l'Ouest et le Sahel (UNOWAS), Mohamed Ibn Chambas, condamne avec la plus grande fermeté l'attaque terroriste qui a eu lieu le 13 août 2017 à Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, et qui a fait au moins 18 morts et plusieurs blessés.

Le RSSG Ibn Chambas exprime sa plus grande sympathie aux personnes endeuillées et aux familles des victimes, ainsi qu’au peuple et au Gouvernement du Burkina Faso, et souhaite un prompt rétablissement aux blessés.

Dakar, 14 August 2017 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mohamed Ibn Chambas, condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist attack, which took place on 13 August 2017 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and resulted in at least 18 deaths, with several other people wounded.

SRSG Ibn Chambas expresses his deepest sympathy to the bereaved and the families of the victims, as well as to the people and Government of Burkina Faso, and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.

Since its establishement, the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel has been engaged to supporting governements and partners to implement ambitions SSR programs.

To consolidate peace and security, many countries in West Africa have initiated crucial reforms of their security sectors with the support of several partners. As a major regional actor, UNOWAS has been engaged since its establishment in 2002* in supporting national authorities and regional organizations to articulate and implement new reforms of the security sector.
