Ramos-Horta welcomes political efforts, concerned about humanitarian situation

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Guinea-Bissau, José Ramos-Horta, welcomed on Saturday in Bissau the efforts being made by the Guinean authorities to form a broad-based government.

Speaking to the press after a meeting that Transitional President Serifo Nhamajo held with the diplomatic corps to brief them on the efforts being made by the President, the National Assembly, the Government and Civil Society with a view to the formation of the broad-based government, Ramos-Horta said “the process is ongoing”.

New UN-supported Access-to-Justice Centre inaugurated in Bafata

7 May 2013 – Guinea-Bissau’s Prime Minister Rui Barros inaugurated today, a new Access-to-Justice Center in the eastern town of Bafatá in the company of the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Guinea-Bissau, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Gana Fofang, and Minister of Justice Mamadou Saido Baldé. The ceremony was also attended by local authorities, representatives of national and international organizations and other members of the UN System and the Government.

Ramos-Horta notes strong determination in Guinea-Bissau to produce political roadmap

19 April 2013 - The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Guinea-Bissau, Jose Ramos Horta, said on Friday after meetings with the Speaker of the People's National Assembly (parliament), the Transitional Prime Minister and heads of political parties that he was convinced there was strong determination on the part of his interlocutors to produce a political roadmap for the West African country.

UNIOGBIS launches book on criminal law in Guinea-Bissau

15 November 2012 - The United Nations Integrated Peace-building Office in Guinea-Bissau, UNIOGBIS, and the Supreme Court, formally launched on Wednesday 14 November 2012 at the National Center for the Training of Magistrates (CENFOJ) in Bissau, a compendium of criminal laws, whose production it sponsored as part of the support it provides to Guinea Bissau’s justice sector.

UNIOGBIS sponsors symposium on military and common criminal justice

18 October 2012 - A symposium on Military versus Common Criminal Justice sponsored by the UN Integrated Peace-building Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS) was held in Bissau on 16-17 October 2012. Sixty (60) participants drawn from the judiciary police (05), bar association (03), prosecutor’s office (21), judges (10) and Higher Military Court (21), participated in the event, which was held under the patronage of Guinea-Bissau’s Attorney General and Higher Military Court. The participants included eight women.

UN Africa II Director in Bissau to better support Guineans efforts in addressing political crisis

5 July 2012 – UN Africa II director João Honwana today completed a 2-day visit in Bissau aimed at discussing with the United Nations office (UNIOGBIS) and partners how to best support Guinea-Bissau in resolving its current crisis.

“I came here to resume contacts with Guinean actors and the country’s reality and see with my colleagues from the UN mission how to better support Guineans in finding solutions for the crisis”, Honwana said.

UNIOGBIS holds workshop on the Role of Female Journalists on Dialogue and Peace Consolidation

26 June 2012 – Approximately 35 journalists from Guinea-Bissau professional and community media, most of them female journalists are participating in a three-day workshop, in Bissau, focused on the Role of Female Journalists on Dialogue and Peace Consolidation.

The workshop aims at contributing to a more active involvement and participation of Guinean female journalists in the debate on dialogue, reconciliation and peace consolidation in Guinea-Bissau.

Technical meeting on Security Sector Reform in Guinea-Bissau

21 June 2012 – Bilateral and multilateral partners in Bissau today held a technical meeting aimed to exchange views on their support to the Security Sector Reform (SSR) process in Guinea-Bissau.

“This is not a new initiative. These are regular meetings on the different areas of the SSR including defense, internal security and justice that UNIOGBIS and partners of the UN Country Team promote to exchanges views amongst the international partners on their activities in support of SSR”, UNIOGBIS SSR chief Antero Lopes said.

Pillay urges new transitional authorities and military to respect human rights
