UN expert urges Japan to heed people’s voices in the aftermath of the nuclear disaster

TOKYO / GENEVA (26 November 2012) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to health, Anand Grover, concluded his mission to Japan today by stressing* the importance of monitoring the effects of nuclear radiation on people’s health. Commending the Government of Japan for undertaking a health management survey in Fukushima, Mr. Grover urged it to expand the survey to all radiation-affected zones and carry out more comprehensive studies that would examine and monitor internal radiation exposure of people in the long-term.

AFTERNOON 8 June 2010

The Human Rights Council this afternoon held a panel discussion on the adverse effects of the movement and dumping of toxic and dangerous products and wastes on the enjoyment of human rights.

Introducing the panel discussion, Alex Van Meeuwen, President of the Human Rights Council, said the overall aim of this panel was to get an overview of the issues related to the movement and dumping of toxic waste, with the view of assessing the impact on the enjoyment of human rights.

Côte d'Ivoire: Press statement by UN expert on Probo Koala incident report

Statement to the press that was delivered by the Special Rapporteur on the adverse effects of the movement and dumping of toxic and dangerous products and wastes on the enjoyment of human rights, Okechukwu Ibeanu, on 17 September 2009:

Some time in mid-2006 a ship flying the Panamanian flag named Probo Koala in the service of a Dutch oil trading company, Trafigura, set sail from somewhere in the Mediterranean. It docked in the port of Amsterdam where ostensibly under the MARPOL convention it attempted to dispose about 500 tons of what was initially assumed to be ship slops.

Human Rights Council holds interactive discussion with experts on water and sanitation, toxic waste and international solidarity


The Human Rights Council this afternoon heard presentations from the Independent Expert on access to safe water and sanitation, and the Special Rapporteur on toxic wastes, after which it held an interactive discussion with the two Special Procedures, as well as with the Independent Expert on international solidarity, who presented his report on Wednesday, 16 September.

Côte d'Ivoire: Toxic waste - UN Expert releases report on 'Probo Koala' incident

GENEVA - "We still don't know -and we may never know- the full effect of the dumping of 500 tons of toxic waste in Cote d'Ivoire," said UN expert Okechukwu Ibeanu, "but there seems to be strong prima facie evidence that the reported deaths and adverse health consequences are related to the dumping of the waste from the cargo ship 'Probo Koala'".

Côte d'Ivoire: UN expert calls for further intervention on the 2nd anniversary of the Abidjan dumping

Okechukwu Ibeanu, Special Rapporteur on the adverse effects of the illicit movement and dumping of toxic and dangerous products and wastes on the enjoyment of human rights, issued this statement today:

Today marks the 2nd anniversary of the extensive dumping of toxic waste in the district of Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, mostly around human dwellings. My thoughts today are with the people of Abidjan who were directly affected by this tragedy. I am thinking especially of the families who lost their loved ones and those caring for their family members, still suffering from health problems.

UN expert calls for full investigation and sanctions against those responsible for the dumping of toxic wastes in Côte d'Ivoire

The following statement was issued today by the Special Rapporteur on adverse effects of the illicit movement and dumping of toxic and dangerous products and wastes on the enjoyment of human rights, Okechkwu Ibeanu:

"I have been following with growing concern the effects of the recent dumping of toxic waste in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire. The consequent pollution has already resulted in the death of at least six persons and poisoned thousands of inhabitants of the city.
